Prochorus the Deacon Little is known of Prochorus, who was among the seven chosen to minister to the needs of the poor, including Greek-speaking widows, in the Christian community at Jerusalem. Legends say that he was the nephew of Stephen and a companion of John the Apostle, who consecrated him bishop of Nicomedia in Bithynia. Other stories say that Peter consecrated Prochorus bishop. He is thought to have been the author of the apochryphal History of the Apostle John, and tradition says he was martyred at Antioch. Karen Rae Keck
